Internet Use Policy

Information Access
The Internet and its available resources contain a wide variety of material and opinions from varied points of view. It is a global electronic network that allows the Library to provide information beyond the Library’s collection.

Wireless Access
The Buena Park Library District provides free wireless Internet access points or "hot spots" during normal Library business hours, to individuals with portable computers.

As with most public wireless "hot spots," this connection is not secure. Any information being sent or received could potentially be intercepted. Cautious and informed wireless users should choose not to transmit their credit card information, passwords and any other sensitive personal information while using any wireless "hot spot."

All wireless access users should have up-to-date virus protection installed. The Library will not be responsible for any information (e.g. credit card) that is compromised, or for any damage caused to an individual's hardware or software due to electric surges, security issues or consequences caused by viruses or hacking.

By choosing to use this wireless service, you agree to abide by the Buena Park Library District’s Internet Use Policy.

Responsibilities of Internet Users
The Library does not monitor and has no control over the information on the Internet. In offering Internet access, the Library cannot control access points, which often change rapidly and unpredictably. Not all sources on the Internet provide accurate, complete, or current information. As with all other formats of information, Internet users are responsible for assessing the credibility, validity and appropriateness of the information found.

Patrons are personally responsible for learning and applying the needed computer skills for exploring the Internet and electronic databases. The Library holds the expectation that its computer users possess a minimal level of competence for using computers and electronic databases. Materials are available in the Library’s collection for self-training.

All are expected to use the Library’s Internet in a legal and responsible manner. Violation of federal, California or local laws, including the transmission or receiving of pornography or harmful material, fraud, or downloading copyrighted material, is prohibited. Any other activities that interfere with or disrupt network users, services, or equipment are also prohibited.

Access by Minors
All Internet resources accessible through the Library are provided equally to all users. There is no age limit for use of any material in the Library or via our Internet services. Children have access to the same resources as adults. As with other Library materials, there are Internet sites that may contain information not suitable for children. It is the Library’s policy that the parent or legal guardian is responsible for deciding what resources are appropriate for his or her child. Parents are encouraged to read Child Safety on the Information Highway produced by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children http://www.safekids.com/child_safety.htm.

Copyright
Materials obtained or copied on this computer network may be subject to copyright laws. Any responsibility for any consequences of copyright infringement lies with the user, and the Library expressly disclaims any liability or responsibility from such use.

Disclaimer
The Buena Park Library District cannot be responsible for the quality or accuracy of any information found on the Internet.

Any use of a Buena Park Library computer workstation constitutes acceptance of this policy.
